BLOOMINGTON — It was just a matter of time.
No. 3-ranked Indiana (1-0-1) rained down shots on DePaul's goal Tuesday (Aug. 29) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium, outshooting the Blue Demons (1-1-0) 31-1. The Hoosiers finally broke through in the 67th minute via freshman Collins Oduro's second goal in as many matches and won 2-0.
Senior Quinten Helmer's curling shot from outside the box in the 76th minute essentially sealed it as Indiana won its home opener and gets ready to host a challenging adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on the weekend.
KEY MOMENTS
• 7' – Oduro had his first of six attempts, three on goal, within seven minutes as a ball fell to him at the top of the box. The freshman hit it first-time with pace but right to the keeper.
• 39' – Perhaps Indiana's closest chance of the first half, senior defender Hugo Bacharach played a soaring ball up to the opposite wing, and, with a burst of speed and precise touch, freshman Clay Murador collected and flew down his left flank. His pass across fell to sophomore Luka Bezerra, but his close-range effort was blocked by a diving defender.
• 45' – Indiana had 15 shots and allowed none but had nothing to show for it at the half.
• 55' – IU was unlucky again 10 minutes out of the break when junior Tommy Mihalic's effort was headed for top corner and saved into the cross bar.
• 66' – After forcing a save in the 61st minute, Oduro finally had his goal five minutes later. Junior Samuel Sarver darted down the right wing and floated a ball over everyone in the box except Oduro, who was waiting to head in at the back post.
• 76' – Helmer was given space 20 yards out and punished the Blue Demons with a pacy, curling shot into the far side netting.
• 84' – DePaul sophomore forward Felipe Corral picked up a second yellow card and was dismissed from the match. The Blue Demons would play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
