
Ryan Promoted to Assistant Head Coach

BLOOMINGTON — A member of the Indiana swimming and diving staff since 2020, Luke Ryan has been promoted to assistant head coach and director of recruiting for swimming, IU head swimming coach Ray Looze announced on Thursday (Sept. 21).
Since Ryan joined Looze's staff, Indiana has won two Big Ten titles on the men's side and finished in the top six at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The women's team has placed top three at Big Tens each season and top-15 at the national meet, highlighted by a program record seventh-place finish at the 2023 championships.
Last season, the men placed fourth at the NCAA Championships led in the pool by Brendan Burns national title in the 100-yard backstroke and seven All-America finishes by fifth-year senior Van Mathias, who posted dramatic year-over-year drops in the 50 freestyle (20.05 to 18.89), 100 freestyle (43.70 to 41.33) and 100 breaststroke (54.74 to 50.57).
After the 2022-23 season, Ryan served as an assistant coach for the Tunisian national team at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships, specifically working with IU swimmer and 2020 Olympian Ahmed Hafnaoui. At the championships, Hafnaoui won world titles in the 1,500 free and 800 free and earned a silver medal in the 400 free, posting top-five times in all three events.
