Indiana Turns in Record Performance at Windon Memorial

Salyers, Starnes Claim Podium Spots
NORTHFIELD, Ill. – The Indiana men's golf team earned bronze at the Windon Memorial Classic to begin the week at the Sunset Ridge Country Club. The Hoosiers shot a team score of 823 (277-269-277; -29) and finished just behind Purdue and East Tennessee State.
A total of six schools tied or broke the Windon Memorial Classic team score record set in 2015. The 823 (-29) put up by the Hoosiers is nine strokes lower than the previous school record of 832 at the Renaissance Intercollegiate in 2009.
Senior Drew Salyers shot a 201 (-12), the sixth-lowest event score in program history to earn runner-up honors. Freshman Cole Starnes fired a 202 (-11), good for the eighth-lowest tournament score in Hoosier lore to earn bronze.

• Senior Drew Salyers finished second overall after shooting a 201 (65-67-69; -12). The 2023 All-American posted 10 birdies in the first two rounds without a bogey. His scorecard reading of 132 after two rounds marked the seventh-lowest 36-hole score in program history. Overall, the Howard, Ohio, native knocked down 14 birdie conversions and one eagle.
• Freshman Cole Starnes announced his presence as a collegiate golfer with a career-low 202 (69-67-66; -11). His week consisted of 11 birdies and one eagle compared to just two bogeys. The Hamilton Southeastern graduate shot all three rounds in the 60s, joining Salyers as the only Hoosiers to accomplish that feat.
• Sixth-year senior Noah Gillard shot a 207 (71-65-71; -6) to tie for 14th in the individual standings. He secured multiple birdie makes in all three rounds, including a stretch of four-straight conversions on No. 13-16 in the second round.
• Salyers and Gillard played the 26th and 27th recorded rounds at 65 or lower in Indiana men's golf in the first and second rounds, respectively.
• Graduate Thomas Hursey shot a 213 (72-70-71; E). He joined Gillard with 11 total birdies.
• Freshman Nick Piesen had an up-and-down Indiana lineup debut but was able to make 10 birdie tries on his way to a 221 (72-74-75; +8).
• Redshirt junior Robert Bender III, playing as an individual, played his most consistent collegiate tournament of his young career. He shot a 211 (71-68-72; -2) with 10 birdies.
