Indiana Basketball Game Notes – Game 21 vs. Iowa

Opening Tip
• Indiana University returns to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall during its 124th season of competition in men's basketball for a matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The game will be broadcasted on BTN.

• IU will kick off the Project 44 Arena Tour in support of Project 44, a nonprofit organization that was started to honor the late Andrew Smith, a beloved, standout member of Butler's two-time NCAA Finals basketball team. Project 44's mission is to save lives through blood stem cell and bone marrow donation.

• The Hawkeyes (12-8, 4-5) are second in the Big Ten in scoring at 85.1 points per game. Iowa scores 94.9 points per game in victories and 71.6 points per outing in losses.

• Fifth-year senior forward Ben Krikke, a transfer from Valparaiso, averages 15.7 points per game to lead the Hawkeyes. Senior guard, and Indianapolis native, Tony Perkins posts a line of 15.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per night.

• Junior forward Payton Sandfort (14.5 points, 6.9 rebounds) and freshman forward Owen Freeman (11.2, 6.2) each hit double figures in the scoring column.

• Head coach Fran McCaffery, who is in his 14th season on the Iowa sideline, is the program's all-time leader in career wins at 273. He passed Dr. Tom Davis (271) on the list.

Series History
• Indiana holds a series advantage of 106-82 against Iowa. The Hawkeyes won both matchups between the two programs last season.

• All-American forward Trayce Jackson-Davis tallied 30 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three blocks, while freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino added 21 points and nine assists in a 91-89 loss at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Jan. 5, 2023.

• Indiana last defeated Iowa on Feb. 7, 2021. The Hoosiers toppled the No. 8 Hawkeyes by a score of 67-65. Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson combined for 32 points and 18 boards in the upset win.

Last Time Out
• Indiana held No. 10/11 Illinois nearly 13 points below their season average but fell 70-62 at the State Farm Center on Saturday, Jan. 27. The game marked the third-straight contest against top-15 opponents.

• Sophomore forward Malik Reneau scored a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and an assist in 34 minutes after starting at center for this first time this season.

• Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako became the first Hoosier to post a double-double on the road in Big Ten play during their debut collegiate season since Trayce Jackson-Davis posted 12 points and 12 rebounds at Illinois on March 1, 2020. Mgbako matched TJD's stat line with a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with 12 points.

• Sixth-year senior guard Xavier Johnson collected 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists in his return to the starting lineup.

Sophomore Jump for Reneau
• Sophomore forward Malik Reneau has posted double digits in the scoring column in 18 games this season, including 12 efforts of at least 15 points. He notched a career-high 34 points against Kennesaw State (Dec. 29) and a Big Ten career-high of 28 points at No. 11/8 Wisconsin (Jan. 19).

• Over the last two non-conference games, Reneau averaged 29.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists on 23-of-33 (69.7%) shooting from the floor, 5-of-7 (71.4%) from the 3-point line, and 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.

• Reneau is averaging a team-best 16.7 points per game to go along with 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 30 minutes per game. He is shooting 57.8% (134-of-232) from the floor, 40.6% (13-of-32) from the 3-point line, and 62.4% (53-of-85) from the free throw line.

• The Miami native has posted double figure scoring outputs in all nine games played away from Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall this season. He is also averaging 17.6 points per game in Indiana's four matchups with ranked opponents.

Mack Attack
• Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako has made a team-high 26 3-pointers this season, including 18 over his past nine games. During the month-long stretch he is shooting 18-of-41 (43.9%) from behind the arc and is averaging 12.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

• Mgbako scored a career-best 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor against Minnesota (Jan. 12) to go along with four rebounds and two assists. He posted his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds at No. 10/11 Illinois (Jan. 27).

• The consensus top-10 recruit is averaging 12.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in Big Ten play. He has reached double figures in the scoring column in 13 of the last 15 games.

• Among freshmen in the Big Ten, Mgbako is tied for first in free throws made (53), second in total points scored (217), points per game (10.9), and made 3-pointers (26), and third in total rebounds (85).

Paint Production
• Indiana averages 38.2 points per game in the paint and shoots 53.2% (435-of-817) from inside the arc. The Hoosiers hold opponents to 28.0 points per night in the key.

• IU gets to the charity stripe 22.9 times per game, the 38th most among all Division I programs and the third-highest figure in the Big Ten.

• Indiana scored a season-best 56 points in the paint against Wright State (Nov. 16). The Hoosiers also tallied 50 paint points against Harvard (Nov. 26) and 52 against Kennesaw State (Dec. 29).

Reneau, Mgbako with Big Games at Illinois
• Sophomore forward Malik Reneau posted a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds in his first start at center this season in Indiana's 70-62 setback at No. 10/11 Illinois on Jan. 27.

• Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako became the first IU freshman since Trayce Jackson-Davis (March 1, 2020) to secure a double-double in a Big Ten road game. Mgbako notched 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Hoosier Comeback Falls Short in Madison
• Indiana scored 53 second-half points at Wisconsin on Jan. 19, but it was not enough to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit. The Hoosiers fell by a final score of 91-79. IU scored a Big Ten season-high 1.22 points per possession.

• Sophomore forward Malik Reneau carried the offensive load with 28 points on 12-of-21 shooting and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako scored 17 points, with 15 coming in the second half.

McNeeley the McDonald's All-American
• Montverde Academy star and Indiana commit Liam McNeeley was one of 24 players named to the 47th annual McDonald's All-American Game.

• The East and West rosters feature 19 of the top 21 prospects in the 2024 ESPN 100, including McNeely, who currently ranks No. 11.

• McNeely is the 34th player committed to the Hoosiers to play in the McDonald's All-American Game. In the last 10 seasons the Hoosiers have seen James Blackmon Jr. (2014), Thomas Bryant ('15), Romeo Langford ('18), Trayce Jackson-Davis ('19), Kel'el Ware ('22), and Mackenzie Mgbako ('23) participate in the game.
