BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman third baseman Cooper Malamazian, a 17th round pick of the Brewers in last summer's MLB Draft, provided the highlights for the Indiana Baseball team in an 18-inning fall scrimmage with Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5) at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Clarendon Hills, Ill. Native hit a pair of two-run home runs in the second nine innings, taking one ball of the scoreboard before slugging his next one over the bullpen in left field. He provided four of IU's five RBIs while playing outstanding defense at third base and shortstop.
Fellow freshmen infielders Hogan Denny and Jake Hanley had a pair of hits over the 18 innings as well. Hanley played the entire day at first base while Denny rotated between designated hitter, left field and third base. Other freshmen to feature in the contest in the field included Will Moore, Cole Decker and Caleb Koskie.
Senior transfer (Southern Indiana) Gavin Seebold started for the Hoosiers for the second time this fall, throwing two scoreless innings. Redshirt senior transfer Cole Gilley (Indiana State) was the other IU pitcher to throw two innings, scattering just one hit against eight batters.
Sophomore pitcher Seth Benes impressed in 1.2 innings of working, allowing zero hits and zero runs while punching out two of four Cincinnati batters. All the Bearcats' runs came in a tough sixth inning.
Returning starters Jasen Oliver, Andrew Wiggins and Jake Stadler each had some impressive at-bats at the plate. Stadler played the first nine innings behind the dish and recorded a hard-hit double to right field. IU's defense impressed on the afternoon with zero errors in 18 innings. Oliver and shortstop Tyler Cerny combined to turn a handful of double plays.
