No. 17/18 Indiana vs. Eastern Illinois
Nov. 10, 2024
• The No. 17/18 Indiana Men's Basketball team (2-0, 0-0) was victorious on Sunday (Nov. 10) afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, defeating Eastern Illinois 90-55.
• The Hoosiers shot 61.3% from the floor (38-62) in the contest. In the second half alone, IU improved its efficiency to 64.7% (22-34). IU scored 90 points for the first time since putting up 100 in a win over Kennesaw State (Dec. 29, 2023)
• Eastern Illinois turned the ball over 17 times, leading to 22 points off turnovers for the Hoosiers. IU scored 31 fastbreak points and added 56 points in the paint.
• IU's three front court starters combined for 52 points (Ballo - 17, Mgbako - 18 and Reneau - 17). The talented trio combined to shoot 23-32 from the floor and racked up 22 rebounds.
• The Hoosiers trailed 37-36 at the break but wielded off a 9-0 run early in the second half to take the lead for the remainder of the contest. In the second 20 minutes, IU outscored the visitors 54-18.
• From the 18:40 mark in the second half to Eastern Illinois' first basket at the under-12 media timeout (11:26), the Hoosiers went on a 24-2 run. It spanned over seven minutes of game time and saw the home team expand its lead out to 17 points.
• IU turned up the defensive pressure over the final 20 minutes of Sunday's contest. Eastern Illinois shot just 16.7 percent from the floor, making just five field goals in the second half. The Panthers committed nine turnovers in the second half.
• Sophomore forward Mackenzie Mgbako continued his hot start to the season, leading the way offensively with 18 points on the afternoon. In his first two games this year, he's averaging 24.5 points per game and shooting 74.1 percent from the floor.
• He was 7-10 (70.0%) from the floor and added seven rebounds and a career high four assists. He played 27 minutes, and IU was +22 when he was on the court.
• His 49 points in the opening two games of the season are the most by an IU player in the first two games of a campaign since James Blackmon Jr. scored 49 (26 vs. Kansas, 23 vs. UMASS Lowell) at the beginning of the 2016-17 season.
• Junior forward Malik Reneau added 17 points on 8-12 shooting (66.7%) from the floor. He picked up six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in an efficient afternoon.
• Sixth-year center Oumar Ballo provided 17 points and nine rebounds, finishing one board short of his first double-double as Hoosier. He shot 80.0% from the floor (8-10) and added three assists and three blocks. He had the highest plus/minus (+25) of any player in the victory.
• Redshirt sophomore guard Myles Rice played 22 minutes. He added five points, five assists, a steal, and a rebound.
• Fifth-year senior guard Trey Galloway provided a big boost off the bench for the Hoosiers. He dished out eight assists in only 18 minutes on the floor. He added five points as well. Over the first two games of the year, he has dished out 17 assists in only 35 minutes of action.
• Freshman forward Bryson Tucker scored in double figures for the first time in his collegiate career. He scored 12 points and added six rebounds. He did not commit a turnover in a career high 20 minutes of action.
• Sophomore guard Kanaan Carlyle scored six points in 24 minutes of action.
• Senior forward Luke Goode hit a pair of 3-point field goals as part of a six-point day. He also added two rebounds and an assist.
• Sophomore guard Gabe Cupps added a valuable defensive effort over his 10 minutes of action on Sunday.
• Senior center Langdon Hatton scored two points in seven minutes of play.
• Redshirt freshman guard Jakai Newton recorded his first career collegiate points with a bucket late in the contest. He medically redshirted last year and played in his first regular season minutes in today's win.
• Up Next: South Carolina will visit Bloomington next Saturday (Nov. 16, 3:00 PM) to take on IU at Simon Skjdot Assembly Hall.
