Offense Rolls in Sweep of UCLA
11/22/2024 9:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Volleyball team (13-14, 6-11) put together its finest offensive night of the Big Ten season, breezing past visiting UCLA (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) on Friday (Nov. 22) evening at Wilkinson Hall. It was the third sweep for the Hoosiers in the Big Ten this year and the sixth win overall in league play.
Juniors Candela Alonso-Corcelles and Avry Tatum provided 20 and 11 kills respectively in a clean offensive showing. Senior setter Camryn Haworth ran a spectacular offense to the tune of a .381 hitting percentage (47-10-97), IU's most efficient night in conference play since Oct. 22, 2010 vs. Michigan.
Alonso-Corcelles' 20 kills were the most in a three-game contest by an IU player since 2015. Since the beginning of the 25-point rally era (2008), no Hoosier has had a 20-kill match in a three-set conference match. The Madrid native had 18 in a sweep of Michigan last October but upped her three-set best to 20 in the win over UCLA on Friday.
Haworth's 40 assists were the most she's ever had in a three-set conference match and are the most by an IU setter in a three-set Big Ten contest since Whitney Granado (41) against Iowa on Nov. 10, 2012. This was her seventh 40-assist output of the 2024 season.
The Hoosiers racked up seven blocks in three games, led by three from sophomore middle Ava Vickers. Team defense wasn't spectacular on Friday but IU did enough to slow down UCLA's primary attacker Cheridyn Leverette (.171, 12-6-35) in the victory. The Bruins hit .286 on the evening but had no defensive answers without the services of veteran middle blocker Anna Dodson.
IU's win over UCLA was the first in program history against one of the four conference newcomers. The two program has met just once before – last year in Long Beach – but IU won the debut contest in Bloomington. The victory gives IU's four-year senior class, led by Haworth, the 30th Big Ten win of their careers. They're the first four-year group to hit that mark since 2010.
It's another quick turnaround for head coach Steve Aird and company as the team prepares for a Sunday night showdown at Ohio State. The game will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network from the Covelli Center in Columbus with a first serve at 7:30 PM ET.
Set Breakdown
Set 1: Indiana 25, UCLA 19
The Hoosiers were prolific from the jump on Friday night, hitting .441 (18-3-34) in the opening set against UCLA. Senior Camryn Haworth dished out 16 assists with five kills apiece coming from junior Avry Tatum, junior Candela Alonso-Corcelles and senior Mady Saris. The Bruins had five attacking errors and two service errors in its attempt to stage a comeback. Ultimately, the Hoosiers were too clean and won the opening set 25-19.
• IU got off to an efficient start at Wilkinson Hall with Haworth running a fast offense. Tatum had IU's first three kills of the match. Alonso-Corcelles got involved with a pair of kills as the Hoosiers opened up an 11-7 lead. The advantage jumped to six after a double block from Tatum and sophomore Ava Vickers. UCLA was finally forced into its first timeout down six points (7-13).
• Alonso-Corcelles recorded a kill to win the race to 20 points for the Hoosiers. On the ensuing point, Saris rejected UCLA middle blocker Leilani Dodson on the solo block to go up seven (21-14) and force UCLA head coach Alfee Reft into his final timeout of the set.
• The Hoosiers took timeouts down 14-17 and 17-22 with Iowa getting whatever they wanted offensively. With graduate student Delaynie Maple playing an undersized front row and Tatum working through injury, IU brought seniors Mady Saris and Morgan Geddes off the bench to spell the runs.
• IU was able to finish off the opening set despite a late push from UCLA. Freshman Ella Boersema hit a crosscourt ball that deflected off a defender for the final point of game one. In total, the Hoosiers had 18 kills in the opening set on Friday.
Set 2: Indiana 25, UCLA 18
Friday night's offensive performance was so good that IU was able to improve its second set hitting percentage to .464 (15-2-28). Alonso-Corcelles took over and provided 10 kills in a dominant set two showing. The Hoosiers had three blocks in game two and recorded three aces to blow it open. UCLA outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette had six kills but it wasn't enough. IU cruised to the 25-18 win.
• UCLA got back on level terms at 7-all but IU responded with a 6-1 run before the visitors took a timeout. Alonso-Corcelles and Vickers had kills before back-to-back blocks on Leverette pushed the advantage to five (13-8). UCLA took two timeouts in four points as the set began to slip away from them.
• The set two lead ballooned to as big as eight (21-13) on the service ace from graduate student Delaynie Maple. UCLA got some late kills from Leverette to close the gap but Alonso-Corcelles finished off game two with a tip over the block for her 10th kill of the frame.
Set 3: Indiana 25, UCLA 20
The defensive pressure amped up in game three as UCLA tried to keep the match alive. IU hit just .257 but got 14 kills – five from Alonso-Corcelles – to put the contest away. Four of IU's five attacking errors came on Bruin blocks but it didn't matter. IU got two blocks of its own and a pair of aces to finish off the match. UCLA missed six serves in game three and stopped its own momentum. The Hoosiers closed out the sweep with a 25-20 win.
• Head coach Steve Aird was quick to call his first timeout of the night after a sluggish start to game three. IU went up 6-3 but quickly allowed three points from a subpar defensive effort. UCLA got the lead back at 10-9 for the final time in the match. Vickers terminated through the block as IU got back in control of the contest.
• A 4-0 run – with a pair of kills from Alonso-Corcelles – opened up the Hoosiers' lead to 13-10. Haworth served out of bounds to break the run but all the momentum was back on IU's side. UCLA would close the gap to one but never threatened the rest of the way.
• An attack error from Leverette forced the first match point of the night. She'd respond with a kill before an UCLA block fended off the first two match points. Leverette served into the net on the third attempt as IU finished off an efficient sweep at Wilkinson Hall.
