11/23/2024 12:35:00 AM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 3/3 Indiana swimming and diving won eight events Friday (Nov. 23) night to keep its pace through two days at the Ohio State Invitational inside the McCorkle Aquatic Center. The Hoosier men extended their lead, while the IU women sit second in a tight battle with host Ohio State.
Sophomore Miranda Grana won her 100 fly, 100 back double Friday after opening the meet victorious in the 200 IM. Grana became the second-fastest Hoosier woman ever in the 100-yard butterfly with a personal-best 51.10. Later in the night, she finished 1-2 with junior Mya DeWitt in the 100 backstroke in 51.10.
Junior Owen McDonald completed the Hoosier sweep of the 100-yard backstroke as the only swimmer under 45 seconds. Only four Hoosier men have broken the 45-second barrier in the 100 back.
The 2024 NCAA runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle, senior Anna Peplowski flexed her muscles in the event Friday night with an NCAA A cut 1:42.36 – only the sixth-best time of her career. Peplowski won by over a second, beating Ohio State freshman Sienna Angove (1:43.54).
After finishing 2-3-4-5 in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2024 Big Ten Championships in this same pool, the Indiana men showed there may still be bigger things to come from "Breaststroke U." On Friday, Hoosiers took five of the top six spots and six top-10 finishes. Graduate transfer Brian Benzing led the way in 51.03, followed closely by second-place finisher, senior Josh Matheny (51.15). Seniors Jassen Yep (51.59), Finn Brooks (52.02) and Luke Barr (52.25) took positions four through six, and freshman Alexei Avakov (52.47) placed eighth.
