No. 17/18 Indiana vs. SIUE
Nov. 6, 2024
• The No. 17/18 Indiana Men's Basketball team (1-0, 0-0) won its seventh-straight season opener, defeating SIUE 80-61 on Wednesday (Nov. 6) evening at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
• Six different players (five transfers, one freshman) made their regular season debut for IU. Those six new players combined to play 121 total minutes.
• The Hoosiers shot 50 percent or better from the field (30-57, 52.6%) for the first time since a win at Minnesota on March 6, 2024 (30-55, 54.5%).
• Indiana had three different players score 15+ points (Mgbako – 31, Ballo – 15 and Reneau – 15) for the first time since Feb. 21, 2024 vs. Nebraska (Mgbako – 22, Ware – 17, Reneau – 15).
• Indiana scored 15 of the first 20 points of the game, prompting a timeout from the visitors at the 14:09 mark of the first half. Sophomore forward Mackenzie Mgbako had nine of IU's first 15 points.
• The Hoosiers scored the opening basket of the contest and led the entire way. IU's lead got as big as 22 at the 4:22 mark in the second half. SIUE tied the game at 27-all with 4:48 in the first half but was outscored 53-34 over the remaining 25 minutes.
• Mgbako provided a career high 31 points in the season opener. It was the fourth time he's scored over 20 points in his career and the first time he's reached the 30-point plateau during his time in Bloomington.
• His 31-point outing was the best scoring output by an IU player in a season opener since Eric Gordon in 2007 (33 vs. Chattanooga).
• He is the first IU player to score 30 points in a game Malik Reneau vs. Kennesaw State last season (34 – Dec. 29, 2023). Mgbako is the 21st different IU player with a 30-point performance since the beginning of the 1996-97 season.
• His 19 points in the opening 20 minutes were the most in a half by an IU player since Kel'el Ware scored 19 in the second half of a 65-64 victory over Michigan State on March 10, 2024.
• Not only did he set a career high in points (31), but the Gladstone, N.J. native also set career bests in made field goals (13). He matched his career best with four three-point field goals, the third time he's done that in two seasons as an IU player.
• Junior forward Malik Reneau added 15 points in the win over SIUE. He finished 5-6 (.833) from the floor and the free throw line. He added seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals on the night.
• Sixth-year center Oumar Ballo also tallied 15 points in his regular season debut for the Hoosiers. He scored 10 of his points in the second half and was 5-6 (.833) from the field after the break.
• Redshirt sophomore guard Myles Rice was the fourth player in double figures, adding 11 points to the tally in IU's victory. He played a team high 31 minutes.
• Fifth-year senior guard Trey Galloway played just 17 minutes but was extremely efficient, racking up six points and a game high nine assists. He was +17 when he was on the court.
• Freshman forward Bryson Tucker scored two points in his collegiate debut. He played 15 minutes off the bench and also grabbed two rebounds.
• Sophomore guard Kanaan Carlyle started and played 25 minutes. He racked up six rebounds and three assists in his IU debut. He was the only Hoosier to play at least 20 minutes without committing a turnover.
• Senior forward Luke Goode played 20 minutes and grabbed four rebounds.
• Sophomore guard Gabe Cupps played four minutes and tallied a rebound.
• Senior center Langdon Hatton saw action for a pair of minutes in relief of Ballo.
