WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- What do you say after a second loss to Purdue, after a strong start faded, mistakes mounted, and chance at a huge upset victory disappeared?
If you're Indiana center Kel'el Ware in the aftermath of Saturday night's 79-59 loss to No. 2 Purdue at Mackey Arena, you keep it simple.
"Get back to practice, work our hardest and try to win these last games," he said from a Mackey Arena hallway.
Indiana (14-10 overall, 6-7 in the Big Ten) couldn't sustain its early intensity, falling behind by as much as 16 points in the first half and 28 in the second.
It has eight days to regroup before hosting Northwestern.
"We know our season isn't over," guard Trey Galloway said. "It's far from over. This hurts, but it's one game at a time. We'll try to win all of them.
"We have to come together. It's not the end of the season. It's a big game and they're a great team, but we have to lock in to Northwestern. Don't lose at home."
Galloway's late first-half six-point surge left the Hoosiers facing a 12-point halftime deficit. Given the Ohio State rally from earlier in the week (it trailed by 18 early in the second half before turning it around), there seemed hope for another comeback.
Those hopes didn't survive the first five minutes of the second half.
"We lost our intensity and our focus," Galloway said. "We have to take care of the ball. There's very little room for error.
"Purdue is a different team (than Ohio State). They're very experienced. They know what they're doing. You can't dig a hole like that because you're not going to come back against those guys."
Purdue coach Matt Painter, seeing what Galloway and Malik Reneau had done against Ohio State (combining for 51 points) made them a defensive focus.
"Let's make it really hard for Malik. Let's make it really hard for Trey," Painter said.
Purdue's 12-0 home record included some drama -- an overtime win against Northwestern, a six-point win over Wisconsin, by five points over Illinois.
There was no drama Saturday night.
"We've got to continue to work and build with our team," IU coach Mike Woodson said. "We have to continue to grow as a team. The season isn't over. Anything can happen. Four of our last seven games are at home."
IU had won at Mackey Arena last season thanks to the 35-point effort from Jalen Hood-Schifino, one of the best-ever performances by a visiting player.
The Hoosiers couldn't repeat that effort on Saturday night, especially in the second half.
"We were awful coming out in the second half," Woodson said. "We couldn't make shots."
Guard CJ Gunn came off the bench to lead IU with 13 points. Mackenzie Mgbako had 12. Ware had 11 points and eight rebounds. Galloway finished with 10 points and seven assists.
Center Zach Edey led Purdue (22-2, 11-2) with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Braden Smith had 19 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
"The difference was Smith and the big fella," Woodson said.
IU hit its first four shots via assists from four different players and led 8-7 at the first media timeout, and 12-9 a minute later.
A 7-0 run helped Purdue build a 35-19 lead with three minutes left in the half. During that stretch, the Hoosiers were just 1-for-10 from the field.
"We got off to a good start," Galloway said. "It didn't last very long. That's on us. We have to remind each other to keep moving it with pace."
Six straight Galloway points to end the half (giving him 10 overall) got the Hoosiers within 12 points at 37-25 at halftime.
IU picked up five fouls less than three minutes into the second half, including Reneau's fourth. The result was a 10-0 Purdue run for a 47-25 lead. Ware ended that run with a 3-pointer -- the Hoosiers' first of the game.
Down 55-35 with 11 minutes left, IU briefly tried pressing. Purdue countered with a pair of 3-pointers for a 26-point lead with 9:48 left.
It was too much for the Hoosiers to overcome.
"I have to continue to teach and work and put the guys in the best position to win," Woodson said. "And give Purdue credit. They're a good team."
