MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – One of the marquee Opening Day matchups provided defensive highlights and big home runs as No. 12 Duke (1-0) edged the Indiana baseball team (0-1) in a 6-3 decision at Brooks Springs Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina.
A stellar Duke pitching staff, highlighted by Jonathan Santucci (1-0) and his five innings of shutout baseball (seven strikeouts), limited the Hoosiers to just three runs in the season opener; all of which came off of home runs.
Sophomore Brayden Risedorph (0-1) was outstanding for the Hoosiers, tossing 4.2 innings while conceding just two hits and one run while striking out four. Junior Ryan Kraft allowed four earned runs with sophomores Aydan Decker-Petty and Evan Whiteaker combining for three innings of one-run baseball.
Junior outfielder Carter Mathison and sophomores Tyler Cerny and Devin Taylor each had multi-hit games. Redshirt freshman catcher AJ Shepard recorded his first collegiate hit while juniors Jake Stadler and Josh Pyne each added a base knock.
Duke took the lead in the fifth inning and would never relinquish it. The Hoosiers closed the gap to one in the fifth and to two in the seventh but couldn't overcome the deficit. Twice, IU stranded two runners on base with two outs in the inning. The Hoosiers struck out 13 times on the afternoon.
Mathison' seventh-inning solo home run was the 30th of his career. Risedorph's 4.2 innings of work on the mound marked the longest appearance of his career.
The Hoosiers return to the ballpark tomorrow afternoon (3:00 PM, ESPN+) to face the hosts, and No. 18, Coastal Carolina.

On the defense…
"We focused a ton on our defensive play and being better across the board. I thought it was outstanding. One of the better defended games since I've been at IU. Some of the plays [Tyler] Cerny made were amazing."
On Risedorph's outing…
"To go four and two-thirds with one run against a good team, you couldn't have asked for more. That's what your Friday guy does. He's competitive. He allows you to get it off the ground."
Starting pitcher Brayden Risedorph
On today's performance…
"I was happy with what I did. I threw strikes. The velo isn't as high as I would like. At the end of the day as long as you're throwing strikes, that's what matters. We gave our guys a chance to win the game. A couple plays here and there and we could've had them."
On this year versus last year…
"Huge difference. I was shaking on the mound in midweeks last year. A lot of it is having confidence in our guys. Our defense played unreal today. After the regional last year, it doesn't get much harder than that. Everything is getting a little easier. Having fun with the game.
