MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A pair of three-run innings and a shutdown save from junior Julian Tonghini (SV, 1) helped the Indiana baseball team (2-1) to a 9-3 victory over George Mason (0-3) in the weekend finale at Springs Brooks Stadium on Sunday (Feb. 18) afternoon.
Junior outfielder Carter Mathison launched a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to break the lead open while Tonghini recorded the final nine outs of the ballgame. Senior pitcher Seti Manase (W, 1-0) threw 2.1 innings in relief and earned his first win of the season.
Sophomore outfielder Devin Taylor recorded his third multi-hit game in as many days while junior third baseman Josh Pyne tallied three hits in the victory. Taylor hit .429 on opening weekend (6-14) while driving in a pair of runs. Pyne and sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny each produced five hits across the first three games.
The Hoosiers held George Mason to just four hits and three runs on the afternoon. Starting pitcher and sophomore Ethan Phillips struck out five batters in 3.2 innings of work. IU's starting pitchers allowed just three runs in 12.1 innings of action on opening weekend.
IU gave up just 11 runs in the first three games, holding Coastal Carolina and George Mason to five combined runs over the final 18 innings of the weekend.
The Hoosiers return home Tuesday for a midweek matchup against Miami (Ohio) before taking to the road for a three-game set at Baylor next weekend (Feb. 23-25).
