Sunday Split with Troy
3/10/2024 8:00:00 PM | Baseball
IU scattered 24 hits across the two games including four in the first game from junior third baseman Josh Pyne and three on the day from junior outfielder Nick Mitchell. Senior pitcher Jack Moffitt (W, 1-0) was awarded the win in game one after pitching 3.2 innings while conceding just one run (unearned) and two hits.
The Hoosiers took a 7-5 lead in the opening game with a five spot in the bottom of the third inning and wouldn't trail the rest of the contest. After going down by four runs in the second game, IU battled back to tie it at 10-all through five innings but Troy scored five of the final six runs of the game to win the series.
A brutally tough beginning to the season continues on Tuesday evening in Nashville as IU travels south to take on No. 9 Vanderbilt in a mid-week clash. IU will come back home on Wednesday to face Illinois State before a three-game set with Belmont next weekend.
Game 1: Indiana 10, Troy 7
Recap – Game 1
After a tough day offensively on Saturday, head coach Jeff Mercer challenged his hitters to be competitive and tenacious at the plate. They did just that on Sunday, scattering 15 hits and putting up 10 runs in the win over the Trojans.
IU jumped on the board early. Brock Tibbitts doubled to left field to score Nick Mitchell before Tyler Cerny brought Tibbitts around to score later and take a 2-0 lead. Troy put up five in the top of the third but IU responded with five of its own in the bottom half of the frame.
Carter Mathison hit a two-run home run against the wind and into the left field bullpen. More runs came via a Josh Pyne single and a Joey Brenczewski double to take a lead the team would never relinquish. The Hoosiers added insurance runs in the seventh with a solo home run from Devin Taylor and RBI single from Cerny.
Jack Moffitt earned his first win in an IU uniform and Ryan Kraft racked up a three-inning save to see out the Trojans in the opening game of the scheduled doubleheader.
Game 2: Troy 15, Indiana 11
Recap – Game 2
Expecting a pitcher's duel early on, the rubber match between IU and Troy quickly turned into a slug fest on Sunday afternoon. The two teams combined for 26 runs as both pitching staffs struggled to find the zone, combining to throw 431 pitches in a 3-hour, 45-minute contest.
After Troy took an early 4-0 lead, IU punched back to tie things at four in the bottom of the third. Carter Mathison hit a two-run home run, his second of the day, to hand the Hoosiers a 6-4 lead in the fourth. Troy's offense continued to produce good at-bats, ultimately landing a six spot in the fifth as the Hoosiers struggled to throw strikes.
Nick Mitchell helped bring IU back into the ballgame in the fifth. His double over the centerfielder's head scored two runs. He would come around to score the tying run after an errant throw from the third baseman allowed Brock Tibbitts to reach with two outs.
Troy's Shane Lewis hit a monster, 475-foot home run in the top of the sixth to give the visitors a three-run lead it would never relinquish. Reliever Noah Manning pitched the final 3.1 innings of the ballgame, allowing zero runs to earn the series victory for the Trojans.
Notes to Know – Both Games
