Indiana Defeats Mercer to Open Florida Tournament

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –––– Despite facing an early deficit, Indiana topped Mercer, 8-4, in a neutral contest on Friday afternoon in Gainesville to begin play in the Florida Tournament.
The win was Indiana's second victory of the week, previously defeating FAU 4-1 on Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla. The Hoosiers are now 21-4 on the seson.

KEY MOMENTS
• Mercer took the early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning to go up 3-0.
• Freshman Alex Cooper had the Hoosiers' first response, crushing a ball over the right field fence to make it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the second.
• In the bottom of the third, sophomore Avery Parker got Indiana the lead back by hitting a home run out to dead center and scoring three runs in the process to put Indiana up 4-3.
• Junior Taylor Minnick added on another run to the lead in the bottom of the fourth when she hit a single through the right side to score Bassett and make it a 5-3 game.
• Mercer added another run on a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth inning to draw closer, at 5-4.
• When it got close, the Hoosiers responded again adding three more runs to extend the lead, 8-4.
• Junior Brianna Copeland and Minnick each had RBI singles to account for the runs in the sixth.
NOTABLES
• Cooper's home run was the third of her career and first since the win over Marshall on Feb. 25.
• Parker's home run was her fifth of the season. The sophomore has gone yard in two of the last three games.
• Minnick's three RBI today brought her season total to 28.
• Sophomore Sophie Kleiman's win improves her season record to 7-0.
• Indiana is 2-0 all-time against Mercer.

Indiana will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader. The Hoosiers will face Mercer at noon and host Florida at 2:30 p.m.
