MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Needing a big day from the pitching staff ahead of a scheduled doubleheader tomorrow, sixth-year senior Ty Bothwell (W, 5-2) delivered the game of his life on Saturday (April 20) afternoon in a 7-1 victory at Minnesota.
Bothwell, who came into the game with 192 career strikeouts, punched out a career-high 13 batters and scattered just two hits and one run across seven innings as the Indiana Baseball team (21-17, 6-4 B1G) built him a healthy lead at Siebert Field.
The Hebron, Ind. native finished his day with 205 career strikeouts which moves him into sole possession of eighth all-time in IU history. He's just the fifth player this century, and first since Pauly Milto (2016-19), to reach the 200-career strikeout mark. Redshirt freshman Jacob Vogel threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out an additional three Minnesota batters.
On a cold day in Minneapolis, IU's batters totaled seven runs on 11 hits. Junior third baseman Josh Pyne recorded the 50th double and 50th multi-hit game of his outstanding career with a three-hit day to lead the offensive attack. Junior outfielder Carter Mathison hit his 38th career home run to lengthen the Hoosier lead in the sixth inning.
Redshirt freshman first baseman Joey Brenczewski continued his torrid run of form in conference play with back-to-back doubles in the fourth and fifth innings. IU's defense made zero errors as it continues to improve over the course of the season.
The two teams will play a scheduled doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:00 AM CT. All pitchers on the trip, besides Bothwell and Vogel, will be available to throw in an expected deep bullpen day.
