QUOTED: Spring Practice - Practice Nine

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti met with the media on Tuesday (April 9) to recap the ninth spring practice of 2024.

Opening Statement: CC: Okay, got a lot of plays in Saturday in the scrimmage and the players had Monday off for the eclipse holiday. Knew it would be a challenge this morning and it was. I still think there is probably a good core nucleus of guys that came out with the right mindset and got better, but too many didn't. We can't have practices like that and get done what we want to get done.
I had to send a pretty stern message afterwards and we'll keep plugging along. I thought we got a lot of good work done Saturday and, even today, a lot of valuable lessons.
On the progress of the secondary...
CC: I think all of those guys are working hard and developing, and once spring is over we'll evaluate that position - like all positions - and see if we think we have what we need to be successful in the fall.
On if he sees the wide receivers room growing...
CC: I am not worried about the gelling and them being best friends, but what I am worried about - and I am not worried because I like that room - the cream rises to the top. Who comes out and practices every day, day in and day out consistency, who learns the plays, who does the right thing, who makes plays, who gives consistent effort. Who doesn't know their plays and who is inconsistent.
So, you know, if you had to lineup for a game today, there is a certain way we'd probably line up, but we don't have to line up for a game today. Our job isn't to please them, their job is to please us.
On position groups that have stood out in the spring...
CC: I like the depth at running back and wide receiver, and I think the offensive line for the most part has been fairly solid. We all know the defense has been shorthanded throughout spring but it's given other guys and opportunity to get reps and get better.
On the second transfer portal window coming up...
CC: Fair to say you are seeing guys go in the portal now and I think everybody in American will look to improve their roster at the end of the spring. With unlimited transfer opportunities right now for student-athletes, there is no telling across the country what could happen with any team.
