Bloomington, Ind. – IU Athletics celebrated its student-athletes recently as part of 'Night to Shine,' the department's annual event designed to honor the athletic, academic, and service-related achievements of the more than 700 students that compete in intercollegiate athletics at Indiana University.
Highlighting the evening's honorees were Women's Basketball's Mackenzie Holmes and Track and Field's Nathan Stone, who were named the 2024 recipients of the G. Frederick Glass Director's Award. Named in honor of IU's athletic director from 2009-20, the Director's Award is presented to two student-athletes who best represent The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, 1 Team.
"For five years, both Mackenzie and Nathan have represented their programs, our department, and Indiana University in the best way possible, making them ideal recipients for this prestigious honor," said IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Dolson. "Their dedication to IU, though, extended beyond their contributions to their respective programs. Both have a deep appreciation for what it means to represent IU, and have worked tirelessly to support their teammates and make an impact in our community."
Holmes recently completed arguably the greatest career in IU Women's Basketball history. She departs as the program's all-time leading scorer (2,530 points) and its first First-Team All-American (2023). Holmes is also one of two players in IU history to earn First-Team All-Big Ten honors four times. Her individual success was instrumental in unequaled team success as well. IU won the 2023 Big Ten title, earned an Elite Eight appearance in 2021 and Sweet 16 trips in 2022 and 2024. The program won 123 games during her five-year career, the most of any player in IU history.
Off the court, Holmes has volunteered her time in countless ways, including at Bloomington's Fairview Elementary School. She has also served as a volunteer at Girls, Inc., and has been heavily involved with Team IMPACT, a national organization that matches children with serious illnesses with a college program. In the IU women's basketball program's case, that individual is Payton Bernhardt, who has been a part of the IU program for each of the past three years.
Stone, meanwhile, departs as one of our Track and Field program's most accomplished pole vaulters. He's a five-time Big Ten champion, with an opportunity for a sixth title this weekend at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He's also a three-time All-American in the event and three-time First-Team All-Big Ten honoree. Off the track, Stone has been an active leader with IU Athletics' student-athlete groups, including the Emerging Leaders.
Another highlight recognition of the event was the naming of the 2023 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients. First presented in 1915, this award is earmarked for individuals who strive for excellence both academically and athletically. Of the nearly 10,000 students who compete in intercollegiate athletics for Big Ten universities annually, only 28 earn this award each year.
Indiana University's 2024 Big Ten Medal of Honor winners are Anne Fowler (women's diving) and Joey Maher (men's soccer).
A spring 2024 graduate, Fowler won three Big Ten individual championships during her career, was a two-time NCAA Championships medalist, and a six-time All-American. She's also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a three-time Big Ten Distinguished scholar.
Maher, meanwhile, was the captain of IU Soccer's 2023 Big Ten regular season and tournament championship squad. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors last fall and helped IU record nine shutouts on the season. A four-year starter, Maher was a defensive anchor for teams that captured four Big Ten championships, made four NCAA Tournament appearances, and earned two NCAA runner-up trophies.
In addition to the Director's Award and the Big Ten Medal of Honor, a multitude of other award winners were announced, including:
