BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– The Indiana Field Hockey team has selected their team captains for the 2024 season.
The Hoosiers' four captains for the 2024 campaign will be seniors Sydney Keld, Jemima Cookson, Sofia Arrebola Garcia and junior Emma Thompson.
Keld expressed her excitement to be one of the captains again and to work with this group to lead the Hoosiers.
"I am so excited to be a part of the captain group this season. The four of us come from four different countries and bring such different qualities and experiences that work so well together. The team has worked so hard coming into this next season and we have high expectations for what this group will accomplish this fall."
This will be Keld's third time serving as a team captain and Cookson's second. Arrebola Garcia and Thompson will both be first-time captains.
All four players have been integral components to the team's success in their time at Indiana.
Keld and Cookson are the most experienced of the captains as they are both exercising their extra year of eligibility in 2024, playing their fifth seasons for the Hoosiers.
Keld, a back, from Middletown, Del. has been a consistent presence in the Hoosiers' lineup, making 58 consecutive starts dating back to 2021. Last year, she recorded two assists, 12 shots and a team-high four defensive saves.
In 2022, she charted a program record and NCAA-leading 12 defensive saves while being tied for the most goals on the team with six along with three assists.
Cookson, a forward from Morpeth, England, brings plenty of experience to Indiana's attack. She owns nine career goals along with eight career assists.
In 2022, she was tied with Cookson for the most goals on the team with six. In the same year, she had a three-goal performance in a win over Bellarmine (Sep. 11, 2022).
Through her three seasons, Arrebola Garcia has made 57 career starts in Indiana's midfield. As she enters her senior campaign, the Santander, Spain native looks to lead as a first-time team captain.
The midfielder has recorded eight goals and ten assists. In her last two seasons, 71% of her shots have been on goal.
Thompson, an anchor to the team's backline, made 34 starts across her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Her experience and leadership will elevate her in her first season as a captain in 2024. She is always a force on defense for the Hoosiers and recorded her first career goal against Kent State (Oct. 29) when she converted on the game-winner in overtime to propel IU to a 3-2 victory.
"I am very excited to be leading the team with Jemima, Sydney and Sofia for the upcoming season." Thompson said on being a captain. "The whole team worked incredibly hard over the spring, and I can't wait to see how this translates to our games this fall."
