BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana men's soccer senior forward Tommy Mihalic led the Big Ten in shots and shots on goal in 2023 but only tallied two goals as a junior. On Sunday (Sept. 1), Mihalic matched his scoring output from a year ago to lead the Hoosiers to a 2-0 victory over Yale on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Mihalic scored three goals in Indiana's two-match homestand this week that also saw the Hoosiers take a 2-2 tie with reigning NCAA runner-up Notre Dame on Thursday. Between the two matches, IU welcomed 8,181 fans to Armstrong Stadium.
KEY MOMENTS
• 11' – Yale had an early to take the lead as sophomore Simon Adjakple took a cross, turned and fired just wide of the post. Indiana held the Bulldogs to seven shots, only one of those forcing a save from senior goalkeeper JT Harms.
• 18' – Freshman forward Michael Nesci was tripped in the box, earning a penalty. Mihalic stepped up for the Hoosiers, guiding his chance into the side netting for the opening score.
• 44' – Yale looked to have its own penalty opportunity late in the first half as a man went down in the box, and the ref pointed to the spot. After review, the referee overturned the penalty, squashing the threat.
• 64' – Senior forward Samuel Sarver drove to the end line and passed across goal to Mihalic, who punched it in to complete his brace and double IU's lead.
NOTABLES
• Sept. 1 marks one year since the Hoosiers last suffered defeat at Bill Armstrong Stadium – a 1-0 loss to then-No. 9-ranked Washington during the 2023 season. In 14 games since that match, Indiana boasts an 11-0-3 record at The Bill.
• IU earned its first clean sheet of the season. In each of its previous eight seasons, IU has finished top 11 in the country in total assists.
• Sunday's result came as Indiana's first-ever win over Yale in what was the first meeting of the programs since 1999 and third overall. Indiana and Yale had never met at Armstrong Stadium prior to Sunday's match.
• With his assist to Mihalic's second goal, 2023 All-American Samuel Sarver earned his first point of the season.
• Mihalic recorded the second brace of his career. The senior last scored twice in his collegiate debut, a 3-2 win at Notre Dame that opened the 2021 season.
• Redshirt sophomore Seth Stewart made his first appearance since his freshman 2022 season and played all 45 minutes of the second half.
