Errors Hurt Hoosiers in Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. – A collection of unforced errors and a tough night defensively was costly in the Big Ten opener on Friday night (Sept. 27) at the Alaska Airlines Arena on the campus of the University of Washington.
The Hoosiers (7-4, 0-1 B1G) were blocked 10 times and committed 11 unforced attacking errors, falling to conference newcomers (RV) Washington in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-18). IU got progressively better over the course of the match but was hurt by six-plus errors in each of the three sets.
Sophomore middle blocker Ava Vickers was a highlight offensively, recording 10 kills on 18 errorless swings (.556, 10-0-18). Junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum also had 10 kills but was held to a .087 hitting percentage (10-8-23). Senior setter Camryn Haworth had 32 assists and seven digs.
Sophomore libero Ramsey Gary helped anchor the back line with 16 digs in just three sets. Junior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles was the recipient of several tips, recording 11 kills. IU managed just one block, its lowest output in the category since a loss to Wisconsin last year (Nov. 19, 2023).
Washington was efficient offensively throughout the evening, committing just seven attacking errors while hitting .337 (41 kills). Opposite hitter Emoni Bush had a match-high 11 kills (.310, 11-2-29).
IU's stay in the Pacific Northwest continues tomorrow evening at No. 11 Oregon. The two teams will play for the first time in program history at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene. The match will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network at 5:30 PM PT.
Set Breakdown
Set 1: Washington 25, Indiana 18
An offensive struggle on both sides, IU committed eight attacking errors in game one. The Hoosiers tallied just nine kills with two each from Candela Alonso-Corcelles, Avry Tatum and Ava Vickers. Washington had three blocks and six kills from Emoni Bush to open a lead down the stretch.
• The Huskies opened an early lead on the serve of Audra Wilmes, taking the opening four points of the match. Alonso-Corcelles tallied the first point for the Hoosiers on an off-speed swing for a kill.
• IU went on a 5-0 run to close the deficit to just one (12-13) midway through the set. Vickers sided out on a kill before Delaynie Maple served the Hoosiers on an extended 4-0 run. Washington was forced to call its first timeout following a massive kill from Tatum.
• Washington was quick to return the favor out of the timeout. IU called a pair of timeouts within six points of each other. Alonso-Corcelles committed a reception error before being denied by the Washington block. The Huskies' lead opened up to six points (20-14) before Haworth could side out with a kill.
• Haworth fended off the first set point with a service ace. IU had a chance to kill the second set point, but Tatum's line shot went wide, giving Washington the early advantage (25-18) in Seattle.
Set 2: Washington 25, Indiana 20
Washington was prolific offensively in the second set, hitting .400 (15-1-35). The Hoosiers had an equal number of kills (15) but committed seven attacking errors, four unforced. Tatum had five kills but four errors. Haworth had 13 assists in game two with Alonso-Corcelles leading the way on six digs.
• Following an early three-point deficit, IU worked itself back into the set. The Hoosiers took an 11-9 lead after head coach Steve Aird overturned an in/out call on a swing from Alonso-Corcelles.
• Washington took the lead back at 14-13 and wouldn't relinquish it the rest of the way. Tatum had back-to-back attacking errors, one on a block and one unforced, before Aird took his opening timeout of the set.
• The Hoosiers wouldn't go away, closing the deficit to just three (19-22, 20-23) down the stretch. Tatum terminated on a ball following a long rally but Washington sided out on the ensuing point to push the lead back to four (23-19).
• A service error from Tatum and a kill from outside hitter Madi Endsley helped see out the second set, opening a large advantage for the home team. Washington won game two 25-20.
Set 3: Washington 25, Indiana 20
IU had its most competitive set of the night in game three, hitting .242 (14-6-33) and digging 17 balls. Ramsey Gary did her best to keep IU in the game with seven digs including a handful of chase down saves. Vickers had five kills on seven errorless swings but it wasn't enough for the Hoosiers. Washington hit .333 in game three (13-2-33) while four blocks helped put the match on ice.
• Washington was quick to open an early 11-5 lead. An attacking error from IU's Mady Saris and a kill from its middle blocker Katy Wessels was enough to force Aird into a timeout.
• Gary helped IU to a couple points out of the break. Her highlight of the night came on a dive into the bench, saving an errant reception from IU. Her effort kept the rally going before Tatum terminated to bring the Hoosiers within four points (7-11).
• IU finally got its first block of the night midway through game three. Alonso-Corcelles did the heavy lifting but got late help from Madi Sell to deny Julia Hunt on the slide. That block closed the gap to just two points (13-15).
• Back-to-back stuff blocks from Washington's Bush and Wessels shifted the momentum back to the side of the home team. Vickers got a kill out of the timeout for IU but the Huskies closed on a 5-2 run to secure the conference-opening win (25-18).
