BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following an emotional loss on Thursday evening in Indianapolis, the Indiana volleyball team (15-3, 6-2 B1G) returned to winning ways with a gritty effort on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) at Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers gutted out a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16) over visiting Ohio State to pick up their 15th win of the season and the sixth in conference play.
Senior opposite hitter Avry Tatum enjoyed a special day as she recorded the 1,000th kill of her collegiate career in the 100th match she's played at the collegiate level. She provided 10 kills, including a pair of late points in the redzone in set four. It was her 13th match of the season with at least 10 kills.
Freshman outside hitter Jaidyn Jager led the charge in a slow offensive day for both teams. She had a game-high 16 kills (4.00 per set). It's the fifth time this year she's had at least 15 kills. Three of those contests have come in Big Ten action. She added a career-high three aces and picked up seven digs as well.
Tatum led the way with five blocks on a night where IU had nine rejections as a team. Freshman middle blocker Victoria Gray added four kills and four blocks. Senior middle blocker Madi Sell returned to the starting lineup with eight kills (.462 hitting percentage) and three blocks. Freshman libero Audrey Jackson had a game-high 13 digs.
IU's win against Ohio State matches its season win total (15) from a season ago; doing so with 12 regular season matches to spare. It's the first time that IU has won 15-or-more matches in four-straight years since the 2007-2010 campaigns. The victory moves IU to 26-7 at Wilkinson Hall since 2023 with 17-straight wins over unranked teams.
For the first time since September, IU will have a full week of practice without having to leave Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers will take Monday off but will have Tuesday through Thursday to prepare for a conference tilt against top-25 Minnesota on Friday (Oct. 24, 6 p.m.) evening on the Big Ten Network.
How it Happened
• It was a slow offensive afternoon as both teams hit under .225. The Hoosiers outlasted the Buckeyes (.221-.200) in the efficiency department. IU also provided more blocks (9.0-5.0) and digs (37-34) than the visitors. Ohio State committed 23 attacking errors – 10 of those in set four.
• It wasn't always pretty but IU ended the match with a more effective run from behind the service line. IU had eight aces to nine errors while Ohio State committed 13 service errors on just five aces. All eight of IU's aces came from true freshmen.
• There were just two lead changes in the whole contest. IU never trailed in set three or set four. IU trailed briefly at 2-3 in set one but rallied to control the frame from there.
