No. 14 IU Shows Resilience, Falls to No. 4 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — No. 14-ranked Indiana men's soccer turned two-goal deficits into one-goal deficits on two occasions Friday (Oct. 24) night on Ludwig Field, but that familiar resilience wasn't enough to get the equalizer at No. 4-ranked Maryland. The Hoosiers (11-4-1, 4-4-0 B1G) fell to the unbeaten Terps (10-0-3, 6-0-2 B1G), 3-2.

Despite going down 2-0 after 58 minutes, the Hoosiers nearly got both back from a 64th-minute score and a 68th-minute shot that hit the post. Maryland re-extended its lead to 3-1 in the 75th, before senior Palmer Ault fired in his NCAA-leading 15th goal of the year in the 81st. The Hoosiers ran out of time to get their third.

• 14' – GOAL! Maryland senior defender Luca Costabile fired a shot from the left side that went through the hands of IU freshman goalkeeper Judewellin Michel at the front post. Maryland 1, Indiana 0

• 68' – A corner fell to redshirt freshman defender Nolan Kinsella, who turned on it and fired into the back post.
• 75' – GOAL! It was Njike's turn to score, chipping the IU keeper after a through ball split the Hoosier defense. Maryland 3, Indiana 1
• 81' – GOAL! Ault collected a pass from sophomore Michael Nesci in the box, took a touch into space and fired IU's second goal into the back of the net. Maryland 3, Indiana 2

• Friday's result marks Indiana's first loss to a ranked opponent this season, dropping to 3-1-1 against Top 25 opponents.
• Ault has scored or assisted in five consecutive matches, with seven goals and six assists in that span. The senior has scored six of his fifteen goals against ranked opponents.
• Indiana moved to 8-7-8 in the all-time series with Maryland while taking its first defeat at Ludwig Field since 2021.

UP NEXT
Indiana will look to tie up a Big Ten Tournament berth with two matches remaining. The Hoosiers will travel to play Northwestern next Friday (Oct. 31) before hosting Rutgers in the regular season finale on November 7.
