BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Since the beginning of the 2022 season, the Indiana volleyball team has gone on the greatest four-year stretch the program has ever seen. At the center of that success has been senior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles. On Wednesday (Nov. 26) evening, she made more program history by becoming the winningest player in IU history – during the NCAA era.
Since the NCAA adopted women's volleyball and made it a varsity sport in 1981, no IU player has won more games than Alonso-Corcelles (75). She provided 12 kills in a 3-0 win at Illinois on Thanksgiving eve to break the all-time program record. The victory also helped IU match a single-season team record for wins (23) and assured it of a top five finish in the Big Ten for the first time since the turn of the century.
This has been a year of records for the Hoosiers as head coach Steve Aird guides the program to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2010. Alonso-Corcelles has broken program records for Big Ten wins (42) and overall wins (75) while moving into the top 10 on the all-time kills list at IU. The Hoosiers have won more matches since 2022 than in any other four-year span in program history.
The regular season for Alonso-Corcelles and IU wraps up with a top-15 tilt at rival Purdue on Saturday (Nov. 29) afternoon. A win in West Lafayette would be the fourth top-25 road win this year and push the Hoosiers to 8-2 on the road in conference play this season. IU will learn its postseason journey on Sunday (Nov. 30) evening.
