Indiana Edges Out Gonzaga In Coconut Hoops Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Indiana had five players in double figures behind 24 points from senior guard Shay Ciezki as it got past Gonzaga, 76-72, on Friday at the Geico Coconut Hoops.

KEY MOMENTS
- Ciezki had seven of IU's first nine points as it led 11-9 at the media timeout. Gonzaga would take a 15-14 lead on a triple with 2:31 remaining but a four-point swing from sophomore forward Zania Socka-Nguemen put IU (7-0) up, 18-15.
- The Bulldogs (3-4) would tie the game with a three at 18-all but sophomore guard Phoenix Stotijn was the difference maker in the first, splitting a pair after a drive to the rim to give the Hoosiers the 19-18 advantage.
- In the second, Gonzaga would own its largest lead of the half at 29-23 with 5:24 to play on a 7-0 run. The Hoosiers would have to battle back to make it a one-possession game at the break as it started with sophomore guard Valentyna Kadlecova knocking down a baseline triple and a Beaumont and-1 pulling them within one.
- Freshman guard Nevaeh Caffey completed her own 3-point play to bring Indiana within one at the break, 36-36. The lead grew to as many as 10 on an 11-0 run by Indiana midway through the third on a Beaumont take at the rim made it 51-41.
- With a seven-point lead to open the fourth, the Bulldogs pushed back late, coming within one with 1:46 remaining as freshman forward Maya Makaluksy stepped up to knock down a left wing three. She also pulled down an offensive board for a putback with 27.1 seconds remaining to keep IU up four.
NOTABLE
- Ciekzi posted her sixth game of 20-points or more with a team-high 24 points going 10-for-18 from the floor and adding three assists and two steals. The Buffalo, N.Y. native also went over 1,300 points for her career in the win, now holding 1,302 career points.
- Makalusky had a season-high 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
- Beaumont chipped in 11 points and six rebounds with a team-high four assists.
- Socka-Nguemen had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds with three assists.
- Caffey also added double figures with 10 points and five rebounds along with two assists and a block.
