Late Errors Hurt in Extra Innings Defeat
2/15/2025 11:00:00 PM | Baseball
Timely hits evaded the Hoosiers most of the night but sophomore second baseman Jasen Oliver finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth inning. His three-run home run to left-center field tied the game for the time being at 6-all.
But IU could never find the winning run. The Hoosiers left the bases loaded on three separate occasions: including in the bottom of the 10th inning. Senior left-handed pitcher Ryan Kraft (L, 0-1) struck out the first two batters he faced in the extra frame. But a string of hits and a throwing error allowed the Musketeers to take the lead back with a pair of runs.
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Cole Gilley struck out a career high 11 batters in 5.1 innings. He allowed just three hits and one earned run but was not factored into the decision. His 11 strikeouts were the most by an IU pitcher on opening weekend since at least 2005.
In total, the Hoosiers racked up 21 strikeouts on the bump. Sophomore right-hander Jackson Yarberry, a transfer from St. Louis, added six of his own in three innings of relief. The team's 21 punchouts matched a program single-game high (vs. Ball State, April 18, 2018) in records dating back to 2001.
IU left 13 runners on base in Saturday's defeat. The Hoosiers have left 21 total runners on base across the first two games of the season. Through 19 innings of baseball, IU has been just 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Oliver's home run (vs. Xavier) and redshirt sophomore designated hitter Joey Brenczewski's RBI single (UNLV) were the lone hits with IU runners in scoring position.
Junior shortstop Tyler Cerny hit the team's first home run of the season, a seventh-inning solo shot to the bullpen in left field. He also hit IU's opening home run of the 2024 campaign (Duke – Feb. 16, 2024). Cerny is the first IU player to hit the team's first long ball in consecutive seasons since Cole Barr (2019, 2020).
Freshman right fielder Hogan Denny recorded the first hit of his career on a 10th-inning single. Fellow freshman Cole Decker made his collegiate debut in a pinch running capacity. Through two games, four different true freshman position players have made an appearance for IU.
The Hoosiers have a quick turnaround as they continue the Sanderson Ford Collegiate Baseball Classic. No. 7 Oregon State (2-0) awaits head coach Jeff Mercer's ballclub in front of a defacto home crowd in Surprise. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. ET (Flo College) with IU set as the designated away team.
Scoring Recap
Bottom Third
The Hoosiers got on the board first. Jasen Oliver walked with the bases loaded to drive in his first run of the contest. Joey Brenczewski flew out to the warning track with the bases juiced, narrowly missing a grand slam.
Indiana 1, Xavier 0
Bottom Fifth
Brenczewski added a second run to the board with a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Cerny.
Indiana 2, Xavier 0
Top Sixth
Xavier hung a crooked number on the board in the sixth, ultimately chasing IU starter Cole Gilley from the game. Jake Lambdin reached on a throwing error by Josh Pyne. After a fly out, Aedan Anderson scored Xavier's first run with a ground-rule double. That effectively chased Gilley, bringing on Ben Grable from the IU bullpen. Grable balked on his first pitch and then walked the ensuing two batters. Grable struck out Clay Burdette. But a wild pitch to the next batter – and a throwing error from Jake Stadler – allowed two runners to score. One more run scored on a RBI single from Landon Mensik before IU finally got out of the inning.
Xavier 4, Indiana 2
Bottom Seventh
Cerny got one back in the seventh when he destroyed a fastball over the wall in left field. His – and IU's – first home run of the season clocked in at 108 miles per hour off the bat.
Xavier 4, Indiana 3
Top Eighth
Xavier got that run immediately back in the eighth. Eddie Peters doubled to left field to bring Burdette around to score from second base. Jackson Yarberry got the final batter to strikeout to escape the inning.
Xavier 5, Indiana 3
Top Ninth
An insurance run came on the form of an unearned run in the ninth. Cerny threw the ball away, allowing Carter Hendrickson to score from first.
Xavier 6, Indiana 3
Bottom Ninth
Oliver got his pitch to hit in the bottom of the ninth and made Xavier pay. He launched a three-run, game-tying home run to left-center field to bring the score to 6-all. IU got the next batter on (Joey Brenczewski) but he was stranded at first as the game went to extra innings.
Xavier 6, Indiana 6
Top Tenth
Ryan Kraft struck out the first two batters but IU's inning unraveled after that. Peters reached on a single but Cerny allowed him to advance all the way to second on a throwing error. A bloop single that landed in front of the center fielder brought Peters home to score the go-ahead run. Xavier got insurance in extra innings with a short infield dribbler off the bat of Hendrickson.
Xavier 8, Indiana 6

Notes to Know
• Graduate student pitcher Cole Gilley recorded a career best 11 strikeouts. His previous career high (6), ironically, came against Indiana last year in a midweek contest. His 11 strikeouts are the most on opening weekend by an IU pitcher since at least 2005. It is the most strikeouts by an IU pitcher in a non-conference game since Luke Sinnard in 2023 (13 – vs. Morehead State).
• As a pitching staff, IU recorded 21 strikeouts across 10 innings of work. In records dating back to 2001, it matched a program single-game record (vs. Ball State – April 18, 2018). Under pitching coach Dustin Glant, IU has turned in seven different outings with at least 17 team strikeouts.
• Sophomore second baseman Jasen Oliver recorded his fifth-career game with at least four RBIs. His ninth-inning home run was the fourth game-tying or go-ahead home run of his IU career. He has had game-tying home runs against Nebraska (May 10, 2024) and Xavier (Feb. 15, 2025). Oliver also had go-ahead three-run home runs last year against Michigan (May 17, 2024) and Purdue (May 21, 2024)
• Junior shortstop Tyler Cerny hit the team's first home run in 2025. He earned the honor a season ago with a solo home run against Duke (Feb. 16, 2024). Cerny is the first IU player to record the program's first home run in consecutive seasons since Cole Barr (2019, 2020).
• Saturday's contest was the earliest extra-innings contest of a season since 2016. Both seasons (2016 and 2025) saw the Hoosiers play at least 10 innings in the second game of the campaign. The Hoosiers lost to Middle Tennessee State in 11 innings in 2016.
