COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum and freshman middle blocker Ella Boersema are among the 100+ collegiate athletes set to attend the USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Program next weekend (Feb. 21-23) in Colorado Springs. Assistant coach Kevin Hodge will accompany the athletes and serve as a coach and instructor at the event.
The pair of Hoosiers are the latest in a long line of athletes that have attended the event. Former outside hitter Morgan Geddes and former setter Camryn Haworth each attended the event two years ago and went on to play for the Women's Collegiate National Team in 2023.
Tatum is coming off her best collegiate season to date. She played in 29 of IU's 30 matches and finished second on the team with 348 kills. She averaged 3.38 kills per set and hit .282, one of the best offensive clips among non-middle blockers in the Big Ten.
The Solana Beach, California native had three different matches with 20-or-more kills, including a 25-kill performance in a win over Ball State on Sept. 14. Two weeks after that, she provided 24 kills at No. 11 Oregon, nearly leading the Hoosiers to a comeback victory.
Boersema played sparingly in her freshman campaign but showed flashes of a potential All-Big Ten middle blocker down the road. She tallied a career high nine kills in a win over Southern Indiana (Sept. 13) and twice added six blocks in a match. In a dominant sweep of UCLA (Nov. 22), Boersema had four kills (.500 hitting percentage) and a pair of blocks.
Both players will get the chance to run through drills and scrimmages while competing against other prospective athletes in front of USA Volleyball personnel. Age-group specific national teams are often selected through events like the Women's National Team Open Program.
