MLB Opening Day Features Familiar Faces

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Three former Indiana baseball players are featured on MLB Opening Day rosters as a new season begins around the country. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (Phillies), left-handed reliever Tim Herrin (Guardians) and veteran southpaw Kyle Hart (Padres) will all begin their years with the big league club.
Schwarber heads into his 11th big league season and his fourth with the Phillies. He's hit at least 38 home runs in each of the past three seasons and has 277 total long balls during his MLB career. On top of his power, Schwarber has been a readily available player in the Philadelphia batting order. He's appeared in at least 150 games in each of the last three campaigns.
Herrin broke on to the scene in Cleveland last season as a lockdown left-handed reliever. He appeared in 75 games (regular season and postseason) and posted an outstanding 1.92 earned run average. In 65.2 innings of work, he allowed just 14 earned runs while striking out 68 batters. He pitched briefly in 2023 as well but has now become an impact arm in one of the best bullpens in baseball.
After five years away from a MLB clubhouse, Hart has worked himself into the rotation as the No. 5 starter for the Padres. He spent the 2024 season with the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization. He won the Choi Dong-won Award – the KBO equivalent of the Cy Young award. His numbers in Korea featured a 13-3 record with 182 strikeouts.
San Diego picked him up on a contract days before spring training began and he's already into the rotation at the big league level. Hart broke into the majors in 2020 with the Red Sox after being a 19th round pick in 2016. During his IU career, Hart finished second all-time in program history with 31 wins.
A number of former IU players are on the verge of breaking into the big leagues as the 2025 season begins. Craig Yoho (Brewers), Matt Lloyd (Cardinals), Tanner Gordon (Rockies) and Matt Gorski (Pirates) are all expected to start the season in Triple-A.
