Malamazian Shines, Hoosiers Split Doubleheader
3/7/2025 9:00:00 PM | Baseball
Junior outfielder Devin Taylor and freshman third baseman Cooper Malamazian each recorded five hits across the two games on Friday. IU racked up 26 runs and 33 hits over 17 innings of baseball. That offensive outpouring included 16 extra-base hits (five home runs, 11 doubles), 15 walks and five hit-by-pitches.
The Hoosiers got an impressive start from graduate student pitcher Ben Grable (W, 3-0) with five innings of work and four strikeouts. Redshirt junior reliever Pete Haas worked the final six outs and preserved veteran righties Cole Gilley and Drew Buhr for Sunday's rubber match.
10 of IU's hits came from true freshmen on the day. That included a two-run home run from Hogan Denny in game one and a four-double effort from Malamazian in the nightcap. Malamazian matched a Big Ten single game record with four doubles. He also broke IU's all-time, and freshman, single game doubles record (4).
IU's tremendous bounce back effort in game two sets up a pivotal rubber game on opening weekend in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers won six-of-eight league weekends last season and will look to start the 2025 conference slate with a road series win in Happy Valley. First pitch is set for Sunday (March 9) at 1:00 p.m.
Game 1: Penn State 15, Indiana 9
Recap – Game 1
After jumping out to a 3-1 lead, Indiana's pitching staff got hit hard by a red-hot Penn State lineup. The Hoosiers (6-8, 0-1 B1G) dropped the opening game, 15-9, of a Friday (March 7) doubleheader at Medlar Field (Lubrano Park) in University Park. Redshirt senior pitcher Gavin Seebold gave up nine earned runs in just 3.2 innings of work.
IU worked counts at the plate and allowed Penn State pitcher Ryan DeSanto to go just 4.0 innings. The southpaw had nine strikeouts but allowed three runs and gave away six free passes (four walks, two hit-by-pitches. The Hoosiers had a chance to crack into a deficit in the fourth inning but redshirt sophomore outfielder Korbyn Dickerson struck out with the bases loaded.
Sophomore catcher T.J. Schuyler continued his hot streak at the plate. He hit his first career home run in the second inning and followed it up with a double in the gap in the fifth. Freshmen Cooper Malamazian (third base) and Jake Hanley (first base) each drove in two runs on RBI doubles.
The Hoosiers were able to extend the game with a four spot in the top of the seventh. Malamazian and junior shortstop Tyler Cerny each had run-scoring doubles in the frame. IU had a chance to close the deficit further but left the bases loaded for the second time in the game. Over the final five innings, IU outscored Penn State 6-1.
It is the second-straight year that IU has lost a lopsided game to open the series against Penn State. Last year, the Nittany Lions struck for seven home runs on Friday in a 15-4 victory. This year, the lethal Penn State batting order slugged four home runs to take the first game on Friday afternoon.
Game 2: Indiana 17, Penn State 6 (F/8)
Recap – Game 2
Despite just a 45-minute gap between games, the Indiana Baseball team (7-8, 1-1 B1G) completely flipped the script in a commanding 17-6 (F/8) win over Penn State in the second game of Friday's (March 7) doubleheader in University Park.
The Hoosiers racked up 17 runs on 22 hits without even batting in the top of the ninth inning. The top eight batters in IU's starting lineup all had hits. Eight different players had multi-hit games – including redshirt senior catcher Jake Stadler, who subbed into the game in the third inning.
IU's freshman hitters stole the show in the Friday nightcap. Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley reached base four times and had a three-hit contest. Freshman third baseman Cooper Malamazian set a single game school record – and matched a single game Big Ten record – with four doubles. He added three RBIs and all four of his base knocks were two baggers.
He is one of four Big Ten players all-time with a four-double contest and one of two to do it against a Big Ten opponent. Before tonight, it was last accomplished by a Big Ten player in 2006 when Chris Herbert (Minnesota) picked up four doubles against Michigan State (April 22, 2006).
On top of matching the Big Ten record, Malamazian set the outright IU single game and single game freshman records for doubles. His freshman counterpart, Hanley, matched an IU freshman single game record with four runs scored (done three times previously).
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Ben Grable (W, 3-0) provided the Hoosiers with a valuable five-inning start. He allowed just one run and struck out four. Redshirt junior reliever Pete Haas recorded the final six outs of the contest and helped preserve some of IU's high-leverage arms for Sunday afternoon.
IU's 22 hits in the second game of the day are tied for the third most in the Jeff Mercer era (since 2019). The program last racked up 22-or-more base knocks against Purdue on May 12, 2023 (25). The Hoosiers were an on-base machine, also reaching on seven walks and three hit-by-pitches.

Notes to Know – Both Games

• On the day, Malamazian was 5-for-9 (.555) with four runs, five doubles, five RBIs, one walk and one stolen base. He also played a fantastic third base and finished with four defensive assists. He is the sixth true freshman at IU with a four-hit game since 2022.
• Graduate student right-handed pitcher Ben Grable became the first IU pitcher to make back-to-back five-plus inning starts while allowing one-or-fewer earned runs since Gabe Bierman (April 18, 2021 – at Northwestern, April 25, 2021 vs. Minnesota). Over his last 11.1 innings (four outings), he's allowed just one earned run.
• Junior outfielder Devin Taylor hit his 42nd career home run in game one of Friday's doubleheader. He moves into a tie for sixth place all-time in IU history with former teammate Carter Mathison (2022-24). Taylor inches closer to the program's all-time mark of 47.
• Redshirt sophomore outfielder Korbyn Dickerson won the race to 10 multi-hit games for the Hoosiers this season.
