Big Hits Escape Hoosiers in Saturday Setback
5/10/2025 5:00:00 PM | Baseball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It always felt like the Indiana Baseball team (28-22, 13-13 B1G) was one swing of the bat from getting back into the game. However, that clutch swing never came as the Hoosiers dropped a 5-1 decision to Purdue on Saturday (May 10) afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field.
IU took a brief lead on a RBI single from freshman shortstop Cooper Malamazian in the second inning but that would be all the scoring the home team did on the afternoon. The Hoosiers had a chance to break open a lead in the second inning but sophomore catcher T.J. Schuyler crushed a ball that landed just inches in front of the fence in left-center field.
The turning point of the game came in the fifth inning with an unlucky bounce to keep runs off the board. Redshirt sophomore Korbyn Dickerson crushed a ball that one hopped the fence for a ground-rule double. If it doesn't go over the fence, junior outfielder Devin Taylor scores easily.
He was called back to third and Purdue went to its bullpen for a soft-tossing left-handed arm. He struck out the ensuing batter and forced a groundout to leave two runners stranded in scoring position. IU never threatened the rest of the way and fell to the visitors to bring up a rubber match tomorrow (May 11) at 4:00 p.m.
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Ben Grable (L, 4-3) and redshirt senior reliever Gavin Seebold combined to throw all nine innings for the Hoosiers. The pair allowed just five runs (four earned) but never stood a chance without run support. Purdue's Michael Vallone (W, 4-1) was awarded the victory.
Connor Onion and Scott Pose have the call tomorrow on the Big Ten Network in IU's home finale. It's likely to be the final contest at Bart Kaufman Field that players such as Taylor and Dickerson appear in. IU will look to pick up its third-straight series win over the Boilermakers and pick up win number 29 on the season.
