ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Indiana Baseball team (30-22) will play in its 12th-straight Big Ten Tournament next week after securing a bid with an 8-7 victory over Michigan on Thursday (May 15) evening at Ray Fisher Stadium. The Hoosiers have the longest active streak of tournaments made (12) by any team in the conference.
It was a tale of two games as the Hoosiers grinded out a win in the first game of the season's final weekend series. IU put up seven runs in the first three innings behind a plethora of good at-bats. Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley had a RBI single and a solo home run as IU jumped out to a 7-2 lead.
The final four innings was all about the pitching for the Hoosiers. Sophomore right-hander Jackson Yarberry (W, 2-0) tossed two important frames, giving up just one run on a fluke bounce. Veteran reliever Gavin Seebold (SV, 3) came on to get the last three outs and pick up the save.
Redshirt senior catcher Jake Stadler had one of the biggest swings of the game. After Michigan scored four in the bottom of the fifth, the veteran bat answered immediately with a solo home run to kick off the sixth. It extended IU's lead back to two runs and ended up making the difference in the ballgame.
IU will go for the series victory tomorrow (May 16) evening in Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers are still searching for their first road series win in Big Ten play this season and are also looking to help boost their seeding in the conference tournament. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. ET on B1G+.
