Indiana Wins Rivalry Series at Purdue to Finish Regular Season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ––– Indiana split the doubleheader with Purdue on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 2-0 and winning the second 10-2 in five innings in Bittinger Stadium.
With the Hoosiers taking the second game, Indiana won the series in their final regular season game.
Indiana closed the regular season with a 32-17 overall record and a 10-12 mark in the Big Ten.
GAME 1: PURDUE 2, INDIANA 0
GAME 2: INDIANA 10, PURDUE 2 (F/5)
KEY MOMENTS
• In the first game, Purdue took an early 2-0 lead, and the score held for the remainder of the game.
• Julia Gossett doubled to bring Khloe Banks home. In the bottom of the second inning, Delaney Reefe came home on a groundout to put the score at 2-0.
• Indiana had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but could not bring any home.
• In game two, Indiana jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two runners on, Kinsey Mitchell bunted for a single and brought Brianna Copeland home in the process to make it 1-0. In the next at bat, Avery Parker advanced home on a Purdue error to extend the lead.
• The Hoosiers continued to do damage in the second inning as Josie Bird hit a home run over the right center wall and Copeland hit an RBI double to score Alex Cooper and make it 4-0.
• Melina Wilkison had two RBI on a triple to left center before she scored on a wild pitch to bring the lead to 7-0 in the top of the third inning.
• Purdue got on the board when Alivia Meeks hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut into the lead and make it 7-2.
• Indiana immediately responded with a 3-run fifth inning. Bird doubled to score Madalyn Strader, then Wilkison hit another triple to score Bird.
• From there, Cooper laid down a sac bunt and scored Wilkison, pushing the lead to 10-2 and setting up the defense in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the run rule.
NOTABLES
• Wilkison is only the eighth Hoosier to have two triples in a game and the first since Jennifer Gluckert did so against East Carolina in 2009.
• Bird's home run was her fifth of the season.
• Copeland's win in the circle was her second of the weekend and it was her second complete game, as well. She improved her season record to 16-7.
• Copeland, Parker and Bird each hit a double in game two.
• Indiana outhit Purdue, 10-2 in the second game.
UP NEXT
Indiana will be right back in West Lafayette for the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday. The Hoosiers' seeding and opponent is still to be determined. The conference tournament will take place May 7-10.
