BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Coinciding with the release of its top-ranked recruiting classes, Perfect Game announced the top-500 "Fresh Arrivals on Campus" as fall baseball continues around the country. Head coach Jeff Mercer and the Hoosiers brought the No. 14 recruiting class to Bloomington for this season, led by nine of the top young prep players in the United States.
This year's freshman class is considered one of the best in program history, even with the loss of talented arms Matthew Fisher and Alex Barr to last summer's MLB Draft. In-state pitching prospects Blane Metz (No. 31) and Xavier Carrera (No. 148) will be important pieces of a revamped pitching staff next spring.
First-year position players have had immense success in Mercer's system at IU. Among the early candidates to have impact from the jump are outfielder Trey Meyers (No. 162), catcher Owen ten Oever (No. 293) and infielder Mateo Noto (No. 320).
Mercer has placed a freshman position player on the Big Ten All-Freshman team in each full season during his tenure. Since 2019, IU has had 16 different players make the Big Ten All-Freshman team. On four occasions, there have been at least three Hoosiers on the team (2021, 2022, 2024, 2025).
The Hoosiers will play two scrimmages this fall against Ball State (Oct. 3) and Xavier (Oct. 19). IU has just 17 returning players from last season but is boosted by a strong sophomore class. Current sophomores first baseman Jake Hanley and shortstop Cooper Malamazian each played in over 50 games a season ago.
