BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — No. 3-ranked Indiana men's soccer (7-2-1, 2-2-0 B1G) buried four goals in a thrilling Big Ten Conference victory over UCLA (2-4-2, 2-1-0 B1G) Friday (Sept. 26) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Goals from seniors Palmer Ault and Jack Wagoner as well as sophomores Easton Bogard and Clay Murador proved too much for the Bruins, who nearly staged a comeback – scoring two goals after IU took a 3-0 lead in the 19th minute. Indiana bent but did not break defensively before Wagoner's 90th-minute penalty kick sealed the 4-2 result.
KEY MOMENTS
• 6' – GOAL! Great team play opened the scoring for Indiana. Murador took the ball on the left wing, just outside the box, held it up and played junior defender Alex Barger's overlapping run. Barger darted, unmarked in the box, towards the end-line and passed across. Ault was the first to it and smashed the ball through the left hand of the UCLA keeper. Indiana 1, UCLA 0
• 16' – GOAL! After settling a ball that was cleared out of the box with his chest, Murador struck a left-footed shot from 25 yards, and it stayed hit into far side netting. Indiana 2, UCLA 0
• 19' – GOAL! Murador earned his second assist from a saved attempt, a header directly into the mitts of the keeper. But it did enough to cause a scramble, and Bogard pounced to score the second-chance goal. Indiana 3, UCLA 0
• 27' – GOAL! Both Bruin goals came from counter attacks. UCLA redshirt sophomore forward Sergi Solans Ormo made a brilliant run to get free for a cross at the top of the six-yard box. His attempt banged off the right post, ricocheted into the back of graduate goalkeeper Holden Brown's left leg and into goal. Indiana 3, UCLA 1
• 54' – GOAL! UCLA made it a one-goal game with a similar opportunity. This time the cross came from the left side, and this time redshirt junior Sebastian Rincon buried his chance. Indiana 3, UCLA 2
• 61' – Senior midfielder Cristiano Bruletti won the ball right outside the box and curved a shot towards the back post, but the Bruin keeper pushed it away.
• 77' – Brown made perhaps his best of six saves with 13 minutes to play, knocking down a long-distance shot from Rincon which curved and bounced towards Brown's back post.
• 90' – GOAL! Indiana cleared UCLA's last attempt out of danger, and the clearance found freshman forward Colton Swan and redshirt sophomore midfielder Seth Stewart – both subs within the final 10 minutes – on the run. Stewart got the ball in the box, wriggled around and earned a penalty with four seconds left on the clock. Ault deferred the spot kick to Wagoner, who put it down the middle for his first-career goal. Indiana 4, UCLA 2
