Defending Champions Strike Late
2/20/2026 7:00:00 PM | Baseball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Through seven full innings, the Indiana Baseball team (1-4, 0-0 B1G) played some of its most competitive baseball of the season. From there, the defending champions – No. 2 LSU (6-0, 0-0 SEC) – turned on the jets to extend their undefeated start to the beginning of the season. The Tigers racked up 18 hits in their 14-7 win on Friday (Feb. 20) afternoon at VyStar Ballpark in Jacksonville.
IU's offense battled tough against the Tigers' Friday ace, forcing him to throw 80 pitches over five innings. The Hoosiers got on the board with RBI singles from sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny and redshirt freshman designated hitter Brayden Ricketts. An additional run came around to score on a throwing error.
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold gave IU a chance to compete in the middle of the ballgame. He tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with a trio of punchouts. He walked in the first batter he faced – charged to graduate student righty Michael Sarhatt – but settled in nicely after that. Junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry (L, 0-1) was given the loss after allowing a go-ahead, three-run home run in the eighth inning.
Denny continued his hot start to the season. He's had hits in four-straight games while reaching safely in all five. Freshman second baseman Landen Fry had his second multi-hit game in as many career appearances while sophomore outfielder Cole Decker provided a pair of hits and scored three times.
The Hoosiers will resume the weekend on Saturday (Feb. 21) evening (4 p.m.) against UCF. The game – along with all the contests this weekend in Jacksonville – will be carried by D1Baseball.com.
