Moran Advances to Round of 16 in Session I

CLEVELAND, Ohio. ––– Indiana opened competition with six Hoosiers competing in Session I at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
No. 14 Jacob Moran (125) led the way for the Hoosiers, winning in a 4-2 decision over No. 19 Kyen Terukina (UNC) in his opening match to advance to the Round of 16.
The five other competitors dropped their opening matches but are still alive in the tournament and will compete in the backside of their bracket tonight.
Session I only consisted of the first set of preliminary round matches and the first round of the championship bracket.
In Moran's match, him and Terukina were scoreless after one before Terukina escaped early in the second period to go up 1-0. Moran would score the match's only takedown in the second period to take the lead. He would hold on from there to advance.
No. 26 Tyler Lillard (165) and No. 7 Max Brignola (Lehigh) were in a tight match through and through, holding a 1-1 score to overtime. In Sudden Victory, Lillard had a takedown taken off the board after review and nearly earned a reversal before losing in the tiebreakers, 3-2.
At 197 lbs., No. 14 Gabe Sollars led 2-0 in the third period before Lehman scored on two takedowns to pull ahead. An escape and the riding time point put the match's final score at 6-4.
A third period takedown decided the win for No. 32 Caleb Uhlenhopp (Utah Valley) over No. 33 Sam Goin (184). Goin will now wrestle in the second round of the preliminary bracket in Session II.
No. 29 Bryce Lowery (157) dropped his match to No. 4 Kaleb Larkin (Arizona State) by major decision and No. 26 Derek Gilcher (174) fell to No. 7 Cam Steed (Mizzou) by tech fall.
