Indiana University, through its varsity, club and intramural sports programs, offers a variety of sports participation opportunities for all of its students.
The Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, through the equity subcommittee of the Athletics Committee, will review and assess, annually, the program to determine, consistent with Title IX, whether the interests of men and women interested in participating in specific sports exceed available opportunities at the University. The report of the equity subcommittee will be submitted to the Athletics Committee for consideration and determination as to what further action, if any, the University should take to ensure that its athletics program equally and effectively accommodates the athletics interest and abilities of all students.
Indiana University has established a procedure for those groups or individuals wishing to seek varsity status for a sport. That procedure is as follows:
- Submit a written statement of your request to the equity subcommittee, c/o Mattie White, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services and the Excellence Academy, SWA, Indiana University Athletic Department, Assembly Hall, Bloomington, IN 47408 or whitemr@indiana.edu. This statement should provide such details as the number of participants, current schedule, records from previous years, equipment and facility needs of the sport, and any other pertinent information. A rationale statement supporting the addition of the sport should also be included.
- This request will be considered by the equite subcommittee. If the subcommittee determines the sport making the request is a viable consideration for varsity status, the committee will forward the request to the athletics director for consideration.
- The athletics director will consider the request and if he/she approves the request, it will be forwarded to the Athletics Committee for consideration. The Athletics Committee will approve or deny the request.
- In the event the equity subcommittee or athletics director does not find it appropriate to advance the request, the request may be made directly to the Athletics Committee.
- If the request is not approved, and the individual/group making the request feels they have not received adequate or fair consideration, they should contact the Indiana University Office of Affirmative Action at 855-7559.
