| Indiana Athletics - Compliance - Question of the Week Thursday, April 2, 2015 |
Questions:
Some True/False Questions:
- It is permissible to employ student-athletes from sports other than the one you coach at your sports camp or clinic prior to receiving pre-approval from the athletics director or his/her designee.
- It is permissible for a student-athlete to obtain information from a sports agent or financial advisor prior to the expiration of their college eligibility?
- It is permissible to return a call to a parent regarding airline information about an upcoming official visit that is 15 days away in the same week that a coaching staff member already made a phone call to the prospect, so that the parent can take advantage of cheaper prices on airline tickets to accompany the prospect.
- It is not permissible for the parent of a friend of a student-athlete to provide his/her son/daughter with tickets to a professional sporting event (so the son/daughter could attend with a student athlete) unless there was a pre-existing relationship that goes back to the 8th grade or earlier and the parent provided tickets back then for the student-athlete to attend an event with his/her son/daughter.
Answers:
- False, ALL student-athletes must receive prior approval.
- True, a student-athlete can obtain information, but can NOT enter into a verbal or written agreement with an agent for representation in future professional sports negotiations.
- Staff members are not permitted to make more than one call a week to a prospect [or his/her relatives or legal guardians] regardless of the reason for the call. Coaches can talk with the parent under these circumstances IF the parent initiated the call, so make sure your secretary or voice mail informs prospects of the one call a week limit. Use e-mail to prevent further violations of this rule.
- True, there is a 4-part test for pre-existing relationships with the key questions being did the relationship begin before the student-athlete attained notoriety as an athlete and did the pattern of benefits remain at the same level.
