Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
A coach's spouse/significant-other has developed a close relationship with the parents of student-athletes. A parent is coming in for a 9-day stay and can only get hotel reservations for 4 of the 8 nights due to other events in town selling out all of the rooms. Can the coach's spouse/significant-other invite the parent to stay with them as long as they charge her the going rate for a hotel room in town?
Answer:
No, They can not stay at the coach's house (even if they pay the going rate) since this is not an arrangement available to the general public. This is similar to the reason parents can not travel on a team's charter flight/bus even if they pay -- the opportunity is not open to the general public and therefore, it is an extra benefit. It would be okay for the parents to stay with their son or daughter or with other student-athlete's as long as the athletics department doesn't arrange it.
