Question:
Can an IU student-athlete work at an IU camp during the academic year (during his/her sport's playing season)?
Answer:
Yes, BUT the employment earnings would be considered athletically related aid and would need to be counted in determining the team's (as well as the individual's) financial aid limits. So, for most of our sports at IU, the practical answer is "no!" since most of our teams are at their financial aid limits.
Also, if the student-athletes were participating in practice activities or were required to work the camp, it would count towards the 4 hours a day/20 hours a week maximum for athletically related activities. Student-athletes, however, may volunteer to work the camp since that would not be countable athletically related activities and there would be no employment earnings to be considered as athletically related financial aid.
