Compliance Question Of The Week
Question No. 1:
With the NCAA prohibition on gambling for all athletics staff and student-athletes, is it permissible for a staff member or student-athlete to participate in the B-97 radio show call-in contest to be assigned one of the 65 teams in the tournament and if that team wins, the participant wins a prize?
Question No. 2:
Can IU Athletics staff and student-athletes participate in the Mountain Dew bottle cap game involving March Madness?
Answer No. 1:
While it is not a technical violation of the NCAA ban on gambling on all intercollegiate and professional sports (because you do not have to provide anything, like money, to get involved), from an institutional standpoint it does not look good if one of our student-athletes, coaches or staff is involved and ends up winning, since his or her name will be repeated over and over on the local radio station. So, please refrain from entering into this contest or any similar contest sponsored by the H-T or other local organization.
Answer No. 2:
Yes.
