Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
The training table is offering free meals this week and next week through the generousity of local restaurants. Since the meals are free, are our volunteer coaches permitted to attend and receive a free meal as well? If a student-athlete and/or coach is wanting the student-athlete to redshirt, what does the coach need to do prior to having the student-athlete participate as unattached in a competition during the academic year? Hint: This is a Big Ten rule!
Question:
The training table is offering free meals this week and next week through the generousity of local restaurants. Since the meals are free, are our volunteer coaches permitted to attend and receive a free meal as well?
Answer:
No! Bylaw 11.01.6 specifically states that the only compensation or remuneration a volunteer coach may receive from IU's athletics department or any organization funded in whole or in part by the athletics department or that is involved primarily in the promotion of IU's athletics programs is a maximum of two complimentary tickets to home athletics contests in the coach's sport. A free meal would be considered compensation or remuneration!
