Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question #1:
Is it permissible for a coach (e.g., Marshall Goss) to ask a former head coach who is considered one of the sport's all-time great coaches (e.g., Sam Bell) to talk to a prospective student-athlete during his visit to campus?
Question #2:
Would your answer change if Sam were no longer employed by IU Athletics?
Question #3:
Would your answer change if Marshall asked Sam to meet the prospect off campus?
Question #4:
Would your answer change if the prospect or his parent had a "pre-existing relationship" with Sam?
Answer #1:
Yes, as long as the former coach is still employed by Indiana University.
Answer #2:
Yes. If Sam were no longer employed by IU, then he would NOT be a permissible recruiter and would instead be considered a booster, thereby prohibited from participating in the recruiting process (on- or off-campus).
Answer #3:
Depends. Athletics Department employees are permitted to recruit off campus (within 30 miles of campus) DURING a prospect's OFFICIAL visit. Other IU employees may only recruit ON campus. If the visit was an unofficial visit, the contact would need to occur on campus.
Answer #4:
No. Pre-existing relationships only apply to situations involving extra benefits or preferential treatment. A pre-existing relationship does NOT mean that the recruiting rules no longer apply. So, please remember to abide by ALL the recruiting rules when dealing with a prospect with whom you have a pre-existing relationship.
