Question:
Is a student-athlete able to earn money by providing private lessons in his or her sport to a paying client?
Answer:
Yes, provided it occurs after August 1, 2002, institutional facilities are not used, playing lessons are not permitted, the student-athlete reports the lessons and fees charged at the annual NCAA eligibility certification meeting prior to the first practice in the fall, and the compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient's family) and not another individual or entity. [Proposal 2000-49, adopted by the Board of Directors at its April meeting and effective August 1, 2002]

Can a student-athlete promote his or her availability to provide private lessons?
Answer:
No, it is not permissible for a student-athlete to use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions. [OI 06/20/02, Item No. 1]
