Question:
Question No. 1: An institutional staff member has a young neighbor who is physically disabled. The youngster attends high school, but is unable to participate in sports due to her disability. She is a huge fan of IU women's basketball and water polo. Is it okay for the staff member to get team apparel from one or both of those teams to give to her?
Question No. 2: May a coach or athletics department staff member directly involved in the recruiting of student-athletes participate (directly or indirectly) in the management, coaching, officiating, supervision, promotion or player selection of any all-star team or contest involving high school players or those who, during the previous year, were members of high-school athletics teams?
Answer:
Answer No. 1: Yes, this would be permissible provided the recipient of the gift is not a relative of a prospect being recruited by IU. [OI 10/22/01]
Answer No. 2: No. Any coach or staff member directly involved in the recruiting of student-athletes is expressly prohibited from participating (directly or indirectly) in the management, coaching, officiating, supervision, promotion or player selection of any all-star team or contest involving high school players or those who, during the previous year, were members of high-school athletics teams.
