Indiana University Athletics
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question: 1. Is it permissible for alumni (e.g., Antwann, Isiah Thomas, Micky Morandini, Trent Green, Mark Spitz) to take pictures and sign autographs for recruits on official or unofficial visits? This is permissible only if the prospect or his/her parents request an autograph or a picture (by handing the coach or host their camera and asking you to take a picture of them with the alum) if they happen to run into a famous alum during a campus visit. The meeting or picture taking may NOT be arranged or initiated by an IU athletics staff member or by a booster. Also, no recruiting conversation should occur. Introductions are fine, again as long as the meeting was not pre-arranged or initiated by an IU staff member or booster.
2. Can an athletics staff member give away his or her complimentary tickets that he or she is not going to use (for a football or men's basketball game) to a youth organization?
Answer 1: This is permissible only if the prospect or his/her parents request an autograph or a picture (by handing the coach or host their camera and asking you to take a picture of them with the alum) if they happen to run into a famous alum during a campus visit. The meeting or picture taking may NOT be arranged or initiated by an IU athletics staff member or by a booster. Also, no recruiting conversation should occur. Introductions are fine, again as long as the meeting was not pre-arranged or initiated by an IU staff member or booster.
Answer 2: Yes, as long as the tickets do not go to a youth organization made up of only prospect-aged members and the tickets are not being used to fund-raise for prospect-aged members.
