Question: If a coach is going to have a number of unofficial visits in the weekend of a home football game, is it permissible for the coach to rent a tent (out of the respective sport's budget with prior permission from the respective sport administrator) for a tailgate (to provide protection from the weather), as long as any prospects (and their guests) on unofficial visits and any student-athletes who attend the tailgate pay for the cost per person for the meal (not including the cost of the tent)?
Answer: Yes, it is permissible for a coach to rent a tent for a tailgate as long as he or she has permission from his or her sport administrator. Also, if food is provided to a prospect and his/her parents at the tailgate, this would count as one of the three meals a day that we can provide on an official visit. Any prospects on unofficial visits and any student-athletes also attending the tailgate would need to pay the cost per person for the meal (if catered) or the actual cost of the meal.
