Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
For those sports who have Local Sports Clubs: If a coach travels to a competition where members of his/her LSC are competing and the coach will engage in coaching duties during the competition, under what circumstances can the coach be reimbursed by IU for recruiting purposes?
Answer:
Only when the coach is engaging in permissible recruiting activities prior to (on the day prior to the start of the competition) or after the competition is over. For example, the competition is Fri-Sun and the coach makes a home visit on Monday in a town located in the same region as the competition (both towns are served by the same major airport). In this case, IU can pay for the coach's airfare, as well as the hotel charge for Sunday night and per diem/car rental for Monday only. IU can NOT pay for hotel or meal expenses during the competition because that would be an impermissible subsidy to the local sports club.
