Indiana University Athletics
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
True or False: The NCAA permits a coach to conduct tryouts with students from IU at any time and regardless of the student's academic eligibility.
Bonus: What are the steps that must be taken before a tryout may occur?
Answer:
The answer is False! This is important for ALL coaches and staff to know and understand - so please continue reading!
First of all, a sport must be in its declared playing and practice season before a "tryout" can occur because tryouts are practice activites with a coach. Second, IU has procedures in place to ensure compliance with NCAA rules. These procedures are as follows:
ANY individual that is interested in participating in intercollegiate athletics at IU (INCLUDING, freshmen, transfers, returners and tryouts) must complete the three steps EVERY YEAR prior to practicing or competing:
1. Academic Eligibility (Freshmen must be registered with the clearinghouse): See Anitra and Kathy for questions.
2. Compliance Forms: See Charnele or Jennifer for questions
3. Training Room (different requirements for walk-ons, scholarship, new and returning SA's): See Kip Smith or your team's athletic trainer for questions.
Also, coaches can direct interested athletic participants to the athletics department web site www.iuhoosiers.com and click on recruiting for more information about becoming a student-athlete at IU. We are working on updating this site, so if you have suggestions for improvements/updates, please direct those to Charnele.
