Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Question No. 1: It is permissible for a coach or staff member to provide a high school, prep school or junior college coach with a blank videotape for purposes of transposing game footage of a prospective student-athlete to the videotape, provided the videotape is returned to IU Athletics.
Question No. 2: It is permissible for a coach or staff member to take a prospect up into the press box (at football or soccer) at any time during the game.
Answer:
Answer No. 1: True (OI 09/03/87).
Answer No. 2: False, it is only permissible to have a prospect in the press box before or after the game, or during half-time. Bylaw 13.7.5.2 prohibits us from providing seating for the prospect or those persons accompanying the prospect in the press box during the conduct of the event (this applies even if the prospects are standing. So, our institutional policy is to allow prospects access to the press box (or sidelines) if they need to meet with the AD, President, or others only before or after the game, or during half-time. Also, remember that the NCAA considers contact between a prospect and a booster in the press box to be a violation of the recruiting ban, even if the contact is limited to just a greeting, so be sure to avoid boosters while in the press box with prospects.
