True/False: It is permissible to give a volunteer coach your basketball tickets for a game you will be unable to attend (hint: answer would be the same for a football game starting NEXT year).
Answers:
Answer No. 1: False, parents are NOT listed as permissible recruiters per Bylaw 13.1.2, so they should never have contact with a recruit at an organized event (team meal, banquet, tailgate, etc.). Otherwise, an incidental contact (e.g., a brief greeting in passing in a parking lot, on campus or at a restaurant) is permissible as long as it is not prearranged and no recruiting conversation occurs. All of this also applies to parents of prospects - parents of currently enrolled (or former) student-athletes should not be introduced to or mingle with parents of prospects at organized events. A brief introduction when appropriate (to be civil) and not prearranged is all that is permissible.
Answer No. 2: True, Bylaw 16.12.2.2.2. If you use your access number for a valid reason (need to connect to the internet on a road trip for class work that is due upon return or an emergency situation) be sure to inform the student-athlete not to use it for personal reasons or give it to others to use. Please do not post your access number in your office or leave it in an accessible place like your desk drawer.
Answer No 3: True, since the tickets are now are personal tickets and not institutional comps, we can do with them what we want (BT email 10/03). Just make sure there is no quid pro quo with a volunteer coach (that he/she is working as a volunteer coach in exchange for the promise of your unused tickets) and that you are just giving unused tickets away in the same manner you would do with any other friend.
